CrashMap

Terms of use

Last updated 7 November 2026

CrashMap (crashmap.nz) and the CrashMap API (api.crashmap.nz) are provided by Tasman Tech Limited, Auckland, New Zealand. By using them you agree to these terms.

Using the map

The map is free for anyone to use, with no account. You may share links to map views and use screenshots of the map in reports, articles, teaching and presentations, as long as you credit “CrashMap (crashmap.nz)” and keep the source credits shown on the map.

The data and the API

The CrashMap predictions, road rankings, road lengths and crash-to-road matching, and the API that serves them, are © Tasman Tech Limited. They are not released under an open licence. Except for the uses of the map described above, you may not copy, republish, resell or build a product or service on the CrashMap data or API without our written permission.

  • The API currently needs no key and is limited to 600 requests a minute per visitor.
  • Do not scrape the map or the API in bulk, or try to get around the rate limit.
  • We may change, limit, charge for or withdraw access to the API at any time.

If you would like to use the data or the API in your own work or product, contact us through tasmantech.co.nz/contact.

Source data

These terms do not restrict your rights in the underlying public data, which you can get from its publishers: crash records from the Crash Analysis System, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (CC BY 4.0), and roads from © OpenStreetMap contributors (Open Database Licence). The base map is provided by Google Maps under Google’s own terms. See Data and API.

No warranty

CrashMap is a research tool, not an official NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi product, and not advice for any journey or decision. It is provided “as is”, without any guarantee that it is accurate, complete or available. To the extent the law allows, Tasman Tech is not liable for any loss arising from its use. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or the Fair Trading Act 1986 that cannot be excluded.

Changes and governing law

We may update these terms; the date above shows when they last changed. These terms are governed by New Zealand law. See also the privacy policy.
