Privacy policy
Last updated 7 November 2026
CrashMap has no accounts, no forms and no advertising on the site. This policy explains the information that is handled when you use it, including the analytics cookies described below.
Who we are
CrashMap (crashmap.nz and api.crashmap.nz) is run by Tasman Tech Limited, Auckland, New Zealand. We follow the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020.
What is collected
- Server and network logs. Like any website, our hosting providers (Google Cloud Run and Cloudflare) receive your IP address, browser details, the pages and data you request, and the time. These logs are used to run the service, keep it secure and diagnose faults.
- Rate limiting. The API counts requests per IP address to stop any one visitor overloading it (600 requests a minute). The counts are kept in memory only briefly.
- Visitor statistics. We use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which does not use cookies, to count page views and measure page speed. We also use Google Analytics, loaded through Google Tag Manager, to understand how people find and use CrashMap. Google Analytics sets first-party cookies (such as
_ga) and collects your approximate location, device and browser, the pages you visit and how you got here. It may also help us measure the results of any advertising for CrashMap or Tasman Tech. - Your browser only. The map remembers whether you left the legend open or closed in your browser’s local storage. This never leaves your device.
Your map selection is kept in the page address so you can share it. It is not stored by us, apart from appearing in the logs above.
Google services
The base map is provided by the Google Maps JavaScript API. When the map loads, your browser connects to Google, which receives your IP address and the map areas you view. Google’s use of that information is covered by the Google Privacy Policy. To see how Google uses information from sites that use its services, see How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services. You can block analytics cookies in your browser settings or with the Google Analytics opt-out add-on; the map still works.
What we do not do
- We do not ask for your name, email address or location.
- We do not sell your information.
- We do not use your information to identify you.
Crash data
The crash records on the map come from the public Crash Analysis System published by NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi. They describe crashes, not people, and contain no names.

Under the Privacy Act 2020 you can ask for a copy of any personal information we hold about you and ask us to correct it. Contact us through tasmantech.co.nz/contact. If you are not happy with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.
